The Plein Air is sponsored by and benefits Childrens Beach House in Lewes, DE, which helps DE children with special needs reach their highest potential. This was my 5th year to participate in the Plein Air, every year since it was started. Plein Air competitions have traditionally included only open air painting, but more recently a few have included photography as well.
Participating in the Plein Air competitions has forced me to shoot areas which I might normally shoot and has helped to improve my photography quite a bit. The week consists of shooting at various locations on Monday through Thursday with finished image submissions by Friday morning and an opening reception Friday evening (Winterthur this year). Image sales continue on Saturday and Sunday. Painters typically submit images daily. A little latifude is given photographers, since time is required to get images printed and framed. Some photographers have this work done at various locations. I do my own printing and mounting which gives me more flexibility, but requires a lot of work. I would up submitting 7 images on Thursday and the remaining 2 on Friday morning. All of my images were 16x24 inch mounted on gator board with UV protection applied. Overall, this is a very demanding week.
