Forest Haven Asylum
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
After seeing some images posted by John Barclay, last Saturday I visited Forest Haven Asylum located just off of I-295, north of Washington, DC. Forest Haven served as a mental hospital and asylum for the mentally retarded from the District up until 1991, when it was closed by court order for the many atrocities and poor conditions which existed there. Today, it simply sits in decay as reflected as this blog image of a dental chair in the main building on the site. The green book placed there by other photographers is titled The Dental Clinics of North America and the calendar shows 1990. Click here for a gallery of HDR images. I chose to use Topaz Adjust to slightly amplify the ‘grungy’ look of the images captured. While I was in the building, I could hear stuff falling from the ceiling.
There is no one web site devoted to Forest Haven, but you can ‘google’ it to find several articles outlining some of the problems which existed.
